| The seated Buddha is presented inside the niche situated in the center of the rock which curves inward at its left and right. The Buddha, its nimbus (a halo), and the pedestal are all rendered with exaggerated width. From its shape, this piece is thought to have been lined up with similar pieces, and inserted in the innner wall of a pagoda. It is noteworthy that a similar example was found at the Kaiyuan Temple in Xi'an area. The Kaiyuan Temple was established in each province in 738 AD by the Emperor Xuanzong. The style of this piece is appropriate for that same period.@
